Get your office skills up to speed with our beginner's guide to Microsoft Word and Excel. Our online course provides an introduction to using the most common word processor and spreadsheet software programmes in use today.


The course consists of two modules, to get you comfortable with your first steps for Excel and Word. The course is then split into bite-sized units which contain narrated slides and demonstration videos to take you through the content in a simple manner.

The course is written in our popular, quick, simple-to-follow style, which works nicely on a laptop or a mobile screen. This doesn't mean we compromise on quality; everything is produced and filmed in-house so you can be sure you are getting the right information. Course Syllabus

  • Course Introduction

    In the course introduction we will provide some guidance how the e-learning works and cover the structure of the course.


  • Getting Started with Excel

    This unit is a gentle start to using Microsoft Excel. In this section you will learn how to create a new document, save your work and open it again. We will then move on and introduce the concept of The Ribbon and finish with an explanation of cell references.


  • Data Exercises with Excel

    It's time to put Excel to work. This section demonstrates how to enter data and use features such as "copy and paste" and "drag and fill". We will also start to improve the readability of our sheets with some formatting.


  • More Spreadsheet Concepts

    The course continues to work through the core concepts of Excel. We now move on to look at basic cell calculations and explain the usage of cell references. The unit also looks at copying formulae and finishes with a bit of magic called "Autosum"


  • Tables and Graphs

    Now it's time to look at creating formatted tables. We will look at some of the useful features of Excel that go with tables, such as filtering, sorting and producing graphs.


  • Preparing and Publishing a Document

    In this last unit we are look at preparing our document for printing and then clicking the print button. We finished with a recap of those ever handy shortcuts.


  • Getting Started with Word

    We will now introduce the Microsoft Word section of the course. The first unit will explore the basic concepts and features including navigation, fonts, styles, bullets and shortcuts.


  • Inserting Objects

    Microsoft Word is a very flexible piece of software which can easily incorporate tables and pictures within text documents. This unit will show you how.


  • Controlling Page Appearance

    Appearances can be very important in Microsoft Word, so in this section the course demonstrates how to make a few key changes to improve the look of your documents. In this section we discuss headers and footers, margins and page numbers.


  • Preparing to Publish a Document

    In our final unit, we show you how to get your document out into the hands of others. We start with spelling and grammar checking, and then move on to printing your document.


Obtaining your certificate

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain your accreditation. Once passed, we will send your official certificate by email.
