Overview

Enhance your understanding of safeguarding through this Level 1 qualification. You'll learn about what safeguarding means, the people and organisations responsible for safeguarding, different types and signs of abuse, the link between safeguarding and technology, discrimination and victimisation, and the process of disclosing safeguarding concerns. This course is perfect if you're a teacher, healthcare professional, social worker, or simply someone interested in understanding safeguarding. Upon successful completion of the invigilated assessment, you will receive an official certificate.


The course provides the knowledge and tools to protect and promote the welfare of individuals in your care, and includes:

  • Narrated video-lessons with English subtitles available
  • Interactive recap activities and quizzes
  • Progress tests and a mock exam, complete with review facility and a bank of changing questions

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course in order to gain the official qualification. This exam can be taken on a laptop with a camera in a suitably quiet location. Your activity on the screen and via the webcam is recorded during the whole assessment and reviewed by the examining body. Upon passing the exam, you will receive an official certificate.

  • Course Introduction

    This unit provides an introduction to the Level 1 Award in Safeguarding for Work, Education and Life course. It outlines the structure of the course and how the rest of the modules and units cover the course content.


  • What is Safeguarding?

    To get the course underway, we start by outlining how safeguarding has developed into what we know it as today. We then examine the definition of safeguarding and how vulnerable adults fit into this definition.


  • Safeguarding and Legislation

    This section looks at the principles that underpin safeguarding children, as well as the legislation and guidance in this area. We also explore what safeguarding means in different contexts.


  • People Responsible for Safeguarding in the UK

    Next, we explore the different people who are responsible for safeguarding in the UK, such as teachers and police officers.


  • Organisations Responsible for Safeguarding in the UK

    Now we'll turn our attention to the different organisations that are responsible for safeguarding in the UK.


  • Duty of Care

    To round off our first module, we explore what is meant by the term "duty of care", including its legal framework, and its moral and ethical implications. We also take a look at what duty of care means depending on your role, and best practices that you can adopt to ensure you uphold your duty of care.


  • Physical and Sexual Abuse

    To kick off our second module, we begin by examining the first two types of abuse: physical and sexual, including those at risk and their impact.


  • Emotional Harm and Neglect

    Continuing our exploration of different types of abuse, this section focuses on emotional abuse and neglect. Once again, we'll look at those at risk of these types of abuse and their impacts.


  • Specific Forms and Contexts

    Now we'll turn our attention to specific forms and situations of abuse, such as domestic abuse and child trafficking. For each, we'll be looking at those most at risk and the impact of the abuse.


  • Factors Increasing Vulnerability Part 1

    Next, we'll start to examine the different factors that can increase the likelihood of someone being abused. This can range from poverty and poor housing, to substance misuse and mental health problems.


  • Factors Increasing Vulnerability Part 2

    Here, we continue our exploration of the different factors that can increase the likelihood of someone being abused.


  • Signs of Abuse

    It's time to look at the signs of the different types of abuse we have covered so far in this course.


  • County Lines Drug Dealing

    This section shifts focus onto county lines drug dealing, as we explain what it is, key terms, and its implications.


  • Recognition Features

    For the final unit of Module 2, we examine the signs of county lines drug dealing that you can look out for, as well as reporting procedures for different professionals, such as teachers, healthcare professionals, social workers, and those in the community.


  • Cyberbullying

    To get our third module underway, we begin by defining "cyberbullying" and summarise the scale of this problem in the UK. We then go on to explore the different types and risks of cyberbullying, before concluding the unit with an exercise on the differences between traditional bullying and cyberbullying.


  • Negative Effects of Cyberbullying

    Now we'll begin to explore the negative effects that cyberbullying can have on victims, from anxiety and depression, to erosion of confidence and self-esteem.


  • Communication Methods that could result in Cyberbullying Part 1

    It's time to do a deeper dive on how different methods of communication can result in cyberbullying.


  • Communication Methods that could result in Cyberbullying Part 2

    Continuing with our focus on communication methods, this section examines how messaging groups, gaming, and chat rooms could result in cyberbullying.


  • Signs of Cyberbullying

    Moving onto the signs of cyberbullying, we look at the different ways cyberbullying can impact its victims, from physical injuries, to difficulty sleeping.


  • Radicalisation and Terrorism

    Switching focus now, we'll examine radicalisation and terrorism, including definitions of these terms, and the relationship between radicalisation and terrorism. In addition, this unit covers some real-world events.


  • The Signs of Radicalisation

    For our final unit of Module 3, we look at the different signs that someone might be getting radicalised. We then round off the unit with a case study to help cement your understanding of this topic.


  • Discrimination and Victimisation

    To begin our fourth module, we'll introduce you to the concepts of discrimination and victimisation, including definitions, types, and how they each occur. We'll also outline the consequences of discrimination and victimisation.


  • The Equality Act

    Now we'll turn our attention to The Equality Act. Specifically, we'll explain its importance and purpose, as well as how equality is ensured for vulnerable groups. In addition, this section outlines how the Act protects from discrimination and victimisation, and the key areas of protection.


  • Protected Characteristics

    In the last unit of Module 4, we delve into the protected characteristics of The Equality Act. We'll provide a detailed explanation of each characteristic, as well as explain what positive discrimination is. We'll also outline implications for professionals and legal consequences.


  • The Importance of Disclosing Safeguarding Concerns

    For our final module of content, we shift our focus to reporting a safeguarding concern. We'll outline the impact and long-term benefits of disclosing abuse, as well as barriers that can prevent people from reporting abuse. In addition, this section examines different methods of disclosing abuse and how you should respond if you spot signs of abuse.


  • Barriers to Disclosure

    It's time to look more closely at the barriers to disclosure and understand why victims might not speak up about abuse. We then explain how victims can overcome these barriers.


  • Ways of Disclosing Safeguarding Concerns

    To finish off this module, we examine the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), including their key responsibilities and challenges they face. We also look at the importance of working together when safeguarding concerns arise.


  • Revision 1

    In this first unit of revision, we'll be revisiting key information from the first module that you will need to know for your exam. In particular, we will use different activities to revise definitions of key terms, and the people and organisations responsible for safeguarding in the UK.


  • Revision 2

    Next, we'll revise key information from Module 2, including different types of abuse, their signs, and county lines drug dealing.


  • Revision 3

    This unit recaps key content from Module 3, such as signs and negative effects of cyberbullying, and radicalisation and terrorism.


  • Revision 4

    This section revisits key information from Module 4. It covers discrimination and victimisation, The Equality Act, and the protected characteristics under this Act.


  • Revision 5

    Our penultimate revision unit revises the importance of disclosing safeguarding concerns, and the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead.


  • Preparation for your Exam

    This unit outlines the equipment you will need to take your exam online, what happens when you send us your exam booking form, the process for setting up your devices in preparation for your exam, and some handy exam tips.


Obtaining your certificate

You will need to pass a multiple-choice exam after you have completed the course in order to gain the official qualification. But don’t worry – we will ensure that you are well prepared with our revision module and mock exam.
